Well folks the Print Design Competition is over! The results are in and we have a winner.
Congratulations to Jasmine Lee!
Before Jasmine becomes incredibly famous, we've had the opportunity to ask her some questions. Read below to learn a little more about our winning artist.
1. Tell us a little more about you.
Hi, my name is Jasmine and I’m currently a second year student studying a Bachelor of Communication Design. I am born in Melbourne and am from a Chinese-Vietnamese background.
2. What made you choose your course?
One of the first reasons I pursued communication design was because of my VCE Visual Communication Design experience. Amongst all my subjects, it was by far the one I was most invested in and passionate about. Another major reason is because from a young age, I have always enjoyed drawing and illustrating and so I wanted to apply this into something useful and impactful.
3. What is the best thing about your course?
Not only do I get the opportunity to be exposed to real designers and clients to expand upon my experiences, but I have found that being surrounded by friends with similar backgrounds and interests helps motivate me to continue growing. I also love being in the heart of the city (so I can eat in between classes).
4. Can you tell us more about your inspiration for your artwork?
I am mainly based in Building 9 and as a result, am nestled amongst the busy city campus. I have always admired how iconic and amazing Building 80 is, as well as the fact that many of my friends have classes there. Personally, when I envisioned RMIT, I would picture this building as well as the green trams that weave throughout the city. I wanted to recreate this image and was also inspired by intricate single line drawings. I mainly researched about Building 80, carefully considering the iconic geometric pattern on its surface.
5. Do you have any influences that inspire you?
One of the artists I have admired most since high school is Cassandra Jean, whose works seem so effortless and graceful. I also really love all the Studio Ghibli movies and the amazing artwork in them. Their positive yet strong messages have remained with me since childhood and helps me to appreciate the small, yet beautiful things in our everyday lives.
6. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I hope to gain more experience in the design industry and potentially have a career in this field. I also hope to travel and visit some of my favourite countries and build cherished memories to remember.
7. Are you currently following any art trends?
I have recently joined Instagram to share some of the art I do with others and have been very interested in ‘Draw This In Your Style’ challenges. In terms of my personal style, I am currently loving minimalist aesthetics paired with Scandinavian interiors.
8. What is your favourite piece of design you have seen?
I recently discovered a lovely artist and potter named Amii Ceramics that creates adorable, custom pots in various animal designs. I myself ordered one and its high quality finish and simple, cute face brings me endless joy every time I see it.
